OK, I find this whole story kinda squirmy uncomfy. Busting somebody in a mens’ room for allegedly soliciting for sex? Yechh.
Shades of the bad old days of persecuting gays.
On the other hand, it’s what happens when people live in the closet. Furtive stupid crap like that. And people of any persuasion ought to be able to use a public restroom without being solicited for sex.
And Sen. Larry (“I’m not gay”) Craig was real big on all that Republican Holy High Clean Lifestyle crap. So it’s hypocrisy that’s the official reason for GOP outrage. But . . .
What if he’d been busted for soliciting an undercover female cop for sex? Probably some public outrage from the GOP, followed by sly winks and backslaps in the Senate cloakroom. (Another term for closet. But no time to let my creative writer play with that one. Gotta post and run.)
Me, I got little sympathy for a United States Senator who’s pounded his bully pulpit against gay marriage and generally run with those GOP bulls on “family values” issues, getting busted for soliciting sex – with anybody, male or female – in a public restroom.
Yecch. That’s where I came in. Gotta run.
EDITED LATER TO ADD: OK, the poor guy has had some private behavior – and stuff inside a bathroom stall has to be about as private as it gets – blown all over the news. I am still not overflowing with sympathy but after all, he is a human being. And thus I’m remembering this. Which helps alleviate some of the yecch factor here.
