At least here in the middle class quasi-’burbs it’s not so much the unwashed, as the marginally literate. This sign was proudly displayed last August. It may have been replaced by now with a correct one.

Well, I don’t know. Perhaps the truth is the sign was 1/ intended as a test to see how many people in X time would notice and write/call/fax/e-mail the municipality and/or 2/ a cry for help and thus elicit tons of cash for education in said municipality…
No? Perhaps you’re right. I might be giving more credit where none is due and it really was a (dis)honest mistake.
The city didn’t post the sign; the property owner (shopping center) did. So far, thank goodness, I’ve not seen spelling mistakes on the city’s signs. Not to say it couldn’t happen.
